"LOUDER THAN BOMBS" - ART, ACTION & ACTIVISM
Over the course of seven weeks the Stanley Picker Gallery will be hosting a series of week-long residencies, staging a programme of workshops and live events that will focus on challenging social, political and global issues addressed through the working practice of the various participating artist/activists, and through inviting direct public participation in their actions.
Both a photographer and writer-in-residence will document and reflect upon the evolving programme of actions and activities, with a view to providing an ongoing critical context and a lasting legacy for the project once completed.

KINGSTON MUSEUM EXHIBITION - SILK, SQUALOR AND SCANDAL: HOGARTH'S LONDON
This exhibition introduces and examines William Hogarth's remarkable career and the range of his work, from polite society portraits or 'conversation pieces' to London street scenes depicting the seedy side of 18th-century life. Though well-known for his brilliant satirical print series, Hogarth was also an accomplished and innovative painter.
Born in the City of London in 1697, Hogarth did not have an easy childhood. Though well-educated and of modest social standing, his father was never able to use his talents to the full and was imprisoned for debt when Hogarth was only 10. For four years, the family lived in debtors' lodgings near the Fleet Prison. Perhaps this experience instilled the determination with which Hogarth approached his own career. Apprenticed to an engraver at 17, by 23, Hogarth had set himself up as an independent copper-plate engraver and enrolled in the Academy of Painting in St Martin's Lane. Throughout the following four decades he pursued both printing and painting with a mixture of skill, innovation and self-promotion, utilising his extraordinary artistic talent as a way of supporting himself.

OPEN ROAD EXHIBITION
In October 2009, the three artists resident at the Toilet Gallery launched a campaign to name the anonymous side-street where the gallery resides. Just four months later, they are proud to announce the council-approved creation of Nipper Alley, named in honour of the dog made famous in the HMV trademark, who lies buried only metres away.
To celebrate the official opening of Nipper Alley, Copernicium are mounting a multi-media exhibition at the Toilet Gallery. Taking the HMV trademark as a starting point, itâs a show of departures. Ranging from a short film shot from a dogâs eye view to a makeshift recording studio and encompassing cartoons, animations made on a iphone, paintings, an installation of vinyl discs and recorded local folklore, itâs a show for all ages. So hit the road and come visit.
Over the course of the exhibition, the public will be invited to use the roentgenizdat recording studio, to record their own songs, stories and local folktales.
An official opening of Nipper Alley with an unveiling of the street sign will be held at 12 midday on 10th March. Please check the website for confirmation of the time.
The Copernicium artists are: Kate Renwick, Dave Loder and Patrick Blower.
The exhibition opens Wednesday 3rd March at 6pm and the private view is open to the public. The show runs until the 21st March.
