ROSE THEATRE PRODUCTION - MISS JULIE

Sex and power dominate Strindberg's scandalous masterpiece.

Miss Julie longs to escape the ties imposed by her position as the daughter of a Count. One midsummer night she embarks on a turbulent affair with her father's manservant, Jean, and finds herself caught in a desperate struggle.

In Miss Julie, August Strindberg explores what draws men and women together - and makes them want to destroy each other.

THE HEART OF BRAZIL EXHIBITION

The Penny School Gallery is hosting this exhibition of unrepeatable photographs and extraordinary artefacts from the indigenous tribes of the Xingu River basin and the Brazilian Rainforest.

The Heart of Brazil exhibition resulted from a gruelling six-month expedition by photographer Sue Cunningham and her writer husband Patrick. The expedition visited 48 remote tribal villages along the 2,500km Xingu River, a major tributary of the Amazon, travelling in a small open boat with only a local boatman. The video of this remarkable expedition will be premiered as part of the exhibition.

The exhibition will be opened on Thursday 15 October by Professor Sir Ghillean Prance, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 1988-1995; Currently Director of Science, The Eden Project; Patron of Indigenous People's Cultural Support Trust, which organised the expedition.

CARDS FOR GOOD CAUSES

Cards for Good Causes will again be operating a Charity Christmas Card shop in Kingston Paris Church, open 10 a.m - 4 p.m. daily (except Sundays) from 24th October - 16th December.

The shop is manned by volunteers from the 40+ charities (both national and local) whose cards, together with a selection of Christmas goods, are on sale. The Charities get a return of 79p in the pound from their card sales (from which they have to pay VAT and the cost of producing the cards).

The Kingston outlet, thanks to excellent support from the local public, has grown to be among the top 10% of over 350 outlets nationwide. We look forward to welcoming customers, both old and new, to hopefully make this another bumper charitable Christmas.

STRANGE PLACES - URBAN LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Strange Places brings together 11 international contemporary artists who propose an alternative mapping of the globalised urban condition. Whether gazing at ambiguous thresholds on the edges of the city, or tracing liminal spaces in its centre, these photographs explore themes of place, identity, boundaries and the uneasy encounter between land and built environment.

Strange Places does not present urban life as action, but meditates on the spaces where action unfolds. What arises from this observation of traces and aftermath is a poetic quality hinting at the potential beauty of the most unlikely places.

Curated by the architect and academic Alexandra Stara, Strange Places features the artists Bitter/Weber, Hannah Collins, Ori Gersht, Steffi Klenz, Sze Tsung Leong, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Mark Power, Xavier Ribas, Heidi Specker, Thomas Weinberger and Rachel Wilberforce.

KINGSTON MUSEUM EXHIBITION - THE PEOPLE AND THE PALACE

As Hampton Court Palace commemorates 500 years since Henry VIIIs accession to the throne, we take a look at how local people experienced daily life in Tudor times. The lavish years of King Henrys reign could not have been so spectacular without a steady supply of food, clothing, animals and people from Kingston and the surrounding villages. In this exhibition we will reveal the reality of everyday life in Tudor Kingston, and the part the Palace played, and still plays, in the lives of ordinary Kingstonians. A programme of workshops and activities will accompany the exhibition.
