Energy Bill Relief Scheme

The current Scheme fixes gas and electricity prices for businesses from 1 October to 31st March 2023.

Details of the support package

  • The scheme is available to everyone on a non-domestic contract, including businesses, voluntary and public sector organisations.
  • Under the scheme wholesale prices are expected to be fixed for all non-domestic energy customers at £211 per MWh for electricity and £75 per MWh for gas for six months, less than half the wholesale prices anticipated this winter.
  • Discounts will be applied to energy usage initially between 1 October 2022 and 31 March 2023.
  • The scheme applies to fixed contracts agreed on or after 1 April and variable and flexible tariffs and contracts.
  • Equivalent support will also be provided for non-domestic consumers who use heating oil or alternative fuels instead of gas.

Businesses do not need to contact suppliers, the discount will automatically be applied to bills.

From 1st April 2023, a new scheme will provide 12 months of transitional support, where the government will offer a discount on wholesale prices of electricity and gas subject to a wholesale price threshold.

Until 31st March, organisations are charged £211 per megawatt hour (MWh) for electricity and £75 per MWh for gas. From 1st April 2023, a unit discount of up to £6.97/MWh will be automatically applied to their gas bill and a unit discount of up to £19.61/MWh applied to their electricity bill.

This discount will be subject to a wholesale price threshold of £107/MWh for gas and £302/MWh for electricity. This means that organisations experiencing energy costs below this level will not receive support.

The government says energy providers will automatically apply the discount to bills.
