Town-wide Marketing Approach

Kingston First are the custodians of the 'In Kingston' brand, investing in marketing and PR to promote the town’s strong retail, leisure, events and cultural offer across a range of platforms.

We work with many members throughout the year to help position Kingston as an unrivalled visitor destination.

Promoting Kingston

Twice a year, our leaflets for Summer and Christmas in Kingston are dropped through the letterboxes of 65,000 local homes. We have also placed leaflet racks around the town centre to provide information for visitors and locals alike, which hold our popular Visitor Guide maps. The leaflet racks also provide an opportunity for Kingston businesses to promote their own events; Kingston First members are free to make use of them whenever needed.

We commission and organise town centre dressing, including flowers, signage and other decorations, throughout the year. In the summer of 2018 we purchased floral installations which were placed around the town and generated a great deal of exposure on social media and local press. 

We also invest in town centre advertising, as well as local bus and train advertising for major campaigns, promoting Kingston and all it has to offer further afield. 

Campaigns and Marketing Opportunities

We create and lead marketing campaigns to highlight aspects of the town, generate press coverage for Kingston and provide opportunities for Kingston First members to get involved. Our two main campaigns are Summer and Christmas, aimed at driving footfall into the town at these crucial times of year. Other recent campaigns have included the Shop Kingston’s Independents promotional campaign and pop-up market for Independent Retailer Month in July 2018.

In 2017, we launched the Kingston Children’s Literary Festival to elevate Kingston’s position as a family-friendly destination. The festival, which generated over 30 pieces of quality media coverage, returns in October 2018. Recent events with opportunities for Kingston First members include the Twilight Market and Big Summer Market in August 2018.

We use our dedicated site, inkingston.co.uk to promote all shopping, eating and entertainment opportunities in Kingston and showcase the town as an unrivalled place for people to visit and enjoy. Taking a consumer-focused, content-driven and editorial approach, the site brings together the different areas of cultural interest, enabling visitors to embark on a journey of discovery.

Members of Kingston First are able to list their business and events for us to promote to the public.

Social Media

We run the In Kingston Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, with a combined audience of just under 15,000.

We use these platforms to reach Kingston residents and locals directly, and invest in paid advertising to promote town centre events and campaigns even further.

Through beautiful photos of our town combined with engaging and helpful content, we aim to capture our followers’ imaginations and inspire them to visit Kingston.

Thumbs Up It’s Thursday

Established over 10 years ago, Thumbs Up It’s Thursday is a highly successful initiative designed to drive footfall into businesses in the town centre during school holidays with fun activities aimed at 2-11 year olds.

Members of Kingston First are invited to host their own event or activity for children to take part in such as scavenger hunts, face painting, cookery workshops and craft sessions that will help drive children and their parents into your business venue. Kingston First promote the campaign, investing in marketing channels directly targeted at parents in the area and produce a printed leaflet detailing all the activities and times that gets distributed around the town.
