Kingston First has worked in partnership with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames to transform Memorial Gardens into a celebration of community, heritage, and remembrance. We are happy to share that the development is now complete and the space opened to the public on the 13th of May.
The transformation respects the garden’s role as a place of memory and commemoration, while improving accessibility, connectivity, and inclusivity for visitors and residents. Important heritage assets were preserved and highlighted, including the War Memorial and the gravestone of Josiah Clues, a Lieutenant in the British Army who served in the Battle of Waterloo. Across the gardens, you will also find biodiversity-focused planting, such as clover, daisies, and ferns, that support native ecosystems.
This project created a new public space at the heart of Kingston’s town centre. Communities can enjoy enhanced green spaces, varied seating areas, and upgraded lighting. The gardens also offer new pathways from Eden Walk and Pratt’s Passage, which will diversify people’s routes through the town centre.
Big thanks to Davies White Ltd and Lanpro for their expert design and landscaping to create this space. And thanks to Blakedown Landscapes for their fantastic delivery, and for the gorgeous drone shots.
We hope you will agree that Memorial Gardens is looking beautiful – and we hope it invites you to sit down, relax, and reflect!
